News

Hi!
Last night, Audrey and Zora went on a fishing trip. They caught 9 fish and kept 8, because one was too small. We used Audrey's dad's boat, and we fished at lake Hemet.

Anyway, here is a fun writing exercise:

Make a family newspaper!

Microsoft word is the best way to type it up on, but you can use something else, too.

First, the name. I chose Schoner-Yardas family prophet for my newspaper, my dad's last name is Yardas, my mom kept her last name Schoner. (My brother got my dad's last name, I got my mom's.)

For the name, I would recommend doing it something that has to do with your family, as your family is probably going to be the ones reading for it. For example, if your last name is Smith, here are a few ideas:

Smith Family Times

Smith Prophet

Smith Family: Tell all

Next, you want the headline news. Go around, see what might be something very important in your family. Whether a pet dying, mom burning a dish, your brother breaking a glass, a family picnic, a new pet, or Cleanup day in the family: what Dad thinks of it, Your family is sure to like the head line. For the headline, you want it to be catchy, like "No!" Dad says, in response to "Please do the dishes." You want your lettering to maybe have a different color, like a bright red, or a blue. For your paragraph however, make it have smaller writing, it will make the headline more noticeable.

Next, you want your paragraph a few lines under your headline, so it doesn't appear squished.

Example:

Is she going to quit Dance?

Lately, Sally has not been liking dance. One of the girls is showing off, she doesn't like the dance, and the music is bad. She has been in dance for a long time, though, and she is still not sure if she wants to quit, because she likes her teacher so much, and she finds some parts of dance very enjoyable.

See, the paragraph should be longer, but that is the kind of interesting sentence you want in a paragraph.

What else to have in your newspaper:

1) One or two short interviews with topics like "Cleanup day in the family: What dad thinks of it"
or "Why Elizabeth wants to remodel her room".

2) Have a joke of the week. You can pick it up from anyone in your family, at school, or at the mall, etc.

3) Put in little coupons, like "foot massage: Available till July 15" or "looking for time to relax, mom or dad? Lisa will do the dishes 4 you!"

4) Put in a quiz, with questions that have to do with your family like, "On which day of the week was Simone born?"

Hope these work!
Zora
